Those first weeks with a newborn can feel like a blur of late-night feedings, diaper changes, and wondering if you’ll ever sleep again.
The truth is, newborns don’t follow strict schedules yet — but having a simple night routine can make evenings calmer and help your baby start learning the difference between day and night. Both my babies were sleeping through the night by 2 months this is what I did.
Even though newborns wake frequently, a calming routine helps their little bodies start recognizing when it’s time to sleep, the key is consistency.
Step 1: Prepare bed if needed
I generally ensure all essentials are kept in the room where the baby sleeps. Since my baby stays in a bedside bassinet, I keep a caddy stocked with diapers, wipes, extra clothes, and a drink for myself within reach. A helpful tip I discovered is to place a worn shirt in the bassinet, as the familiar scent can be very soothing for the baby.
Step 2: Dim the Lights 30 minutes before bed
This encourages the release of melatonin and signals nighttime. When it’s time to put them to sleep I turn all lights off. It is best if you do this around the same time every night.
Step 3: Fresh Diaper + Cozy Pajamas
A clean diaper and soft pajamas help babies stay comfortable through the first stretch of sleep.
Step 4: Sound Machine + Cuddle Time
White noise machines mask background sounds and mimic the soothing environment of the womb, helping babies feel secure. Cuddling or rocking your infant to sleep fosters deep bonding and provides a sense of safety during the transition to sleep.
Step 5: Feeding Time
Establishing a calm feeding routine before bed helps infants settle and often leads to their longest stretch of sleep. If you are breastfeeding, your body naturally adds melatonin to nighttime milk to help your baby fall asleep. If you are bottle-feeding, a recommended option is provided below.
Every baby is different. Some nights will feel smooth and peaceful, and other nights will feel long and exhausting. That’s completely normal in the newborn stage.
A simple routine doesn’t create perfect sleep — but it can make evenings feel calmer for both mom and baby.
The initial weeks with a newborn are as demanding as they are precious. Establishing a gentle nighttime routine can bring a sense of peace to your evenings and help the entire family get the rest they need. Aim for a routine that is consistent yet flexible, avoiding unnecessary complexity or rigidity.
